Understanding Food Allergies & Sensitivities
Although the terms allergy and sensitivity are often used interchangeably, they are distinct conditions with different immune responses:
- Food Allergies A true food allergy involves an immediate and potentially severe immune system reaction. When someone with a food allergy consumes or comes into contact with a specific allergen, their body produces an immunoglobulin E (IgE) response, which can result in symptoms ranging from hives and swelling to life-threatening anaphylaxis. Common food allergens include nuts, shellfish, eggs, wheat, and dairy.
- Food Sensitivities (or Intolerances) Food sensitivities produce a more delayed immune or inflammatory response, often mediated by immunoglobulin G (IgG) or other pathways. Individuals with sensitivities may experience various symptoms hours or even days after consuming triggering foods, including bloating, migraines, joint pain, fatigue, and skin issues. Common sensitivities can involve gluten, dairy, soy, and certain additives.
While allergies can be serious and sometimes life-threatening, sensitivities often go undetected for years—leading to chronic symptoms and contributing to deeper health complications. Accurate testing allows you to clearly identify which foods are causing distress, so you can avoid or minimize exposure and reclaim control over your health
Why Test for Food Allergies & Sensitivities?
Although the terms allergy and sensitivity are often used interchangeably, they are distinct conditions with different immune responses:
- Pinpoint Sources of Chronic Inflammation Ongoing inflammation in the gut can pave the way for more significant health issues, from autoimmune conditions to metabolic disorders. By uncovering problematic foods, you reduce strain on the immune system and promote proper digestion.
- Support Gut Health An irritated gut struggles to absorb nutrients, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies and imbalances. Eliminating trigger foods allows the gut lining to heal, boosting microbial diversity and fortifying your digestive environment.
- Prevent Long-Term Health Complications Untreated food sensitivities can aggravate chronic conditions such as autoimmune disorders, migraine headaches, eczema, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
- Individualized Nutrition Not everyone responds to food the same way. Targeted testing puts you in control, tailoring your nutritional strategy and empowering you to feel your best.
Our Approach to Food Allergy & Sensitivity Testing
At PrimeHealthMD, we use comprehensive testing methodologies to provide a clear, detailed view of your body’s immune responses to common allergens. Our advanced testing includes:

- IgG & IgA Antibody Panels: Detect delayed or hidden sensitivities that may contribute to chronic symptoms.
- Lifestyle & Nutrition Evaluation: We take time to discuss your dietary habits, personal preferences, and potential exposures to allergens or sensitivities within your daily environment.
